    Example text

Your starting fabric will set the mood and style of your quilt and establish your color scheme. Using the colors in this starting fabric is the easiest way to build an assortment of fabrics. Everything else is built on this foundation. You will choose three fabrics for your quilt, remembering to keep three things in mind: color, value and print scale. Always begin your fabric search by locating one fabric you love. Maybe you have a specific room in mind, so you would match your fabrics to the colors in that room.

Some black-and-white print fabrics are predominately black, others predominately white; choose one of each and add one more color—smashing! When building an assortment this way, remember to choose one small-, one medium- and one large-scale print. BACKING FABRIC Finally, all the projects in this book list the backing fabric as a separate yardage. If you plan to use the quilt on a bed, you may want to use one of the three main fabrics on the back. If you plan to hang the quilt on the wall, you can choose a less expensive solid cotton, since no one will see the back anyway.

Analogous: a color scheme built of two or more colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Don’t panic! This usually means using either cools or warms—blues/greens/yellows, reds/oranges/yellows or reds/blues/purples. An analogous color scheme will appear more complex than a monochromatic color scheme, but with the same serenity. 3. Complementary: a color scheme that includes the complementary color of the predominant color in the assortment. Adding at least one complementary color will give a spark of life to the quilt.
