Garry: People can deteriorate over the space of a couple of weeks. Alan: Look at any American President! Jimmy Carter, just before he got in, looked really nice. You look at him two months later and the eyes are hanging down. Richard Nixon—it was like something from the Quartermass experiment, wasn’t it? In four years, he turned into something unbelievable. The sort of thing you expect to find under your sink unit. [Laughter] It does happen. I don’t want to explain it too logically and say, “Oh, we planned all that,” because we didn’t.

Alan Moore: Well, you come up with your plot ideas first. Say we talk about Warrior and a series like V for Vendetta—what I did first was to sit down and work out the entire world, all the stuff that I’m never going to use in the strip, that you never need to know, but I’ve got to know it. You’ve got to have the whole world in your head so that you can get the texture of it. So I started working out this world from the premise that Margaret Thatcher was going to lose the 1982 elections. Then I worked out that Michael Foot gets in.

Any change occurs because your thinking is changing. When I started out, I was very interested in people like Gil Kane, but recently I’ve come to appreciate people like Alex Toth more, who does really minimal david roach, andrew jones, simon jowett, greg hill / 1983 25 line work. I suppose if I ever get ’round to it, I’ll start dropping a lot of line out of my work, and you will see a cleaner image. What was in that letter was just a personal opinion put forward. You cannot really say, “This is good comic artwork.
