This shows how just a few good quality observations can tell you a lot about a child’s starting points. Good quality observations help you to evaluate your practice and think of next steps for the child. Perhaps most importantly, observations like this help you to get to know a child, and provide a focus for discussions with the child’s parents.

It is not practical, and probably not even possible, to assess a child against all six areas of development when they start in a setting. Children who are just getting used to nursery are unlikely to show their best communication or immediately get involved in complex play for long periods. They are more likely to be a little quieter than usual, to hold back and watch others, or to seek reassurance by repeating favourite play activities or staying close to their key person. Children who are starting in a setting are unlikely to take well to a practitioner quizzing them on their number and colour knowledge in order to fill out a baseline assessment form.
