In addition I have acquired a good reading knowledge of the closely related Afrikaans.  Although the children call me Bert in German, they have always referred to me as Dad(dy) when talking about me in English; for this reason, in the English translations of German conversations given in this book, Bert is translated as Dad(dy).  Their reaction to my notetaking and recording is little different from that which they and probably most children have to being photographed — they object only if they see it as interfering with what they are doing at the time.

This situation differs from most of those reported in the literature on bilingual families in that not only is English the dominant and official language of the community in which the family lives and the native language of the mother, but it is also the native language of the father: Such a situation makes possible the observation of many factors affecting the fostering, maintenance and nurturing of a minority language, and, since the father is not a native speaker of German, it also affords some insight into difficulties experienced by parents who, by choice or necessity, communicate with their children in a second language.

Since the bilingual has two terms for one referent, his attention is focused on ideas and not words, on content rather than form, on meaning rather than symbol, and this is very important in the intellectual process as it permits greater cognitive flexibility.  The bilinguals consistently outperformed the monolinguals on both the quality and linguistic complexity of their hypotheses.  In both aspects of creativity, linguistic and cognitive, the bilinguals appear to excel" (Kessler & Quinn, 1987:180).
