The parts of the felt left in the dye bath the longest will be the darkest. For painting dyes on wool, the felted piece needs to be wet, or it will not soak up the dye well. Dye will just sit on the surface of the dry felt and not soak through the entire thickness. it helps to press the dye into the wool to make sure it penetrates the full thickness. it isn’t possible to create intricate patterns or thin lines by painting dye on felt. Because of the unevenness of the surface, the dye generally soaks in irregularly and fine designs will be lost.
