Given this inspiration, it was not accidental that these radical humanists focused primarily on the critique of religion, which, they believed, perpetuated an artificial separation between divine and human nature. It was in their religious critique, which had strong political overtones, that the young Hegelians practiced the philosophical activity of "criticism," a term most clearly associated with Marx's future teacher and older colleague, Bruno Bauer. In the four-year period which is our present concern, Marx produced a doctoral dissertation and a series of articles which, though printed as "journalism," are much more essays on social philosophy than sociological discussions of current events.

Marx's essays of 1843 directly confront Hegel's political, social, andreligious philosophy at the most generalized level. If any single catalyst marked this new phase of Marx's transition it was his encounter with Feuerbach. Though certainly Marx was familiar with Feuer bach's earlier writings, it was the Preliminary Theses for Reform of Philosophy, published in February 1843, that made a deeper impression on him. 47 Feuerbach, indeed, generated immediate and widespread controversy by launching a quasi-materialist critique of Hegel.

In France, he moved for the first time within an almost exclusively socialist circle, an international group which included Mauer, Proudhon, 22 The Antinomies of Classical Thought Blanc, and Bakunin, and which emphasized, in contrast with Marx's early "radical democracy," the determinate role of economics in social life. 48 Finally, it was in 1843 that Marx began his first serious readings in social and political history, particularly that of America and France. None of these personal facts, of course, "explains" Marx's changing theoretical orientation; they simply provide contextual corroboration for the kinds of rapid shifts which are readily observable in his intellectual life.
